Charity, Goodwill and Social Responsibility

Since 1992, McMurry and its staff have helped raise more than $43 million in donations and have personally given $2.5 million in cash through the two charitable arms of the business, Theresa’s Fund (founded 1992) and McMurry Charities (2007).

The combined efforts of these charities change and improve the lives of people all over the world and in some cases have stimulated community and social change. All staff members participate in these goodwill activities and they will tell you they receive something of immense value in return, proving that it is better to give than receive.

The purpose of Theresa’s Fund is combating child abuse and domestic violence in all forms in Arizona and in the Capital Region of New York. That, as its articles of formation prescribe, is its only focus and the sole cause to which grants are awarded. The charity is funded through McMurry profits as well as 100 percent participation from the company’s staff. Every five years the staff at McMurry selects charities that will receive all or part of a $500,000 matching gift. Theresa’s Fund was created by McMurry Founder and Chairman Preston V. McMurry Jr. in 1992. It has a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, offering donors tax relief for contributions and enabling it to distribute funds to qualified nonprofit organizations.

To deepen its commitment to corporate citizenship and strengthen the company’s charitable mission, McMurry expanded its outreach in 2007 through the creation of McMurry Charities. The mission of McMurry Charities is to spread the good fortune of McMurry and its staff to a wide variety of organizations that represent the diversity of interests of the company and its people and in doing so, contribute to making McMurry the best place to work. Every dollar that goes into McMurry Charities goes out to organizations selected by staff members. The point is to direct funds to charities important to our people and without regard to the corporate agenda. The mission of Big Green is to become a recognized leader in financially sustainable environmental stewardship by pioneering meaningful initiatives that reduce waste and energy consumption, protect biodiversity and conserve precious resources — and by encouraging our staff, partners, peer groups and clients to do the same. More than 50 companywide and grassroots efforts have led to planting thousands of trees and substantially reducing our carbon footprint, allowing McMurry to demonstrate how businesses can be environmentally smart while remaining competitive and successful.
